WHAT IT'S LIKE TO ELOPE IN NOVA SCOTIA
WHY NOVA SCOTIA IS SO UNDERRATED
Marriage laws are in Canada are pretty simple compared to many international destinations. You do not need residency, and there is no waiting period once the paperwork is complete. Most couples simply apply for a marriage license once they arrive in Nova Scotia.
CANADIANS:
NON-RESIDENTS
You only need to apply for a marriage license in Nova Scotia, and have 2 witnesses. It's that easy!

HOW TO PLAN A NOVA SCOTIA ELOPEMENT FROM THE US
Most couples don’t start by searching for Nova Scotia, let's be real. Most people don't even know where it is! They usually begin with places like Scotland, Iceland, or U.S. National Parks.
These destinations are incredible, but they offer very different elopement experiences once planning actually begins.
The ultimate choice is less about which place is “prettiest” and more about which one actually fits the kind of wedding day you want.
SCOTLAND OFTEN MEANS
More crowds in popular locations
More structured tourism and logistics
More travel for North American couples
Scotland and Nova Scotia share similar landscapes: rolling highlands, coastal cliffs, and moody weather, but the experience of eloping in each is very different.
NOVA SCOTIA OFFERS
Similar scenery with far fewer people
Easier travel from the U.S.
More freedom/flexibility on your wedding day

ICELAND
Long driving distances between locations
Highly unpredictable weather conditions
Limited privacy at iconic locations
Higher overall travel costs
Iceland is one of the most visually dramatic elopement destinations in the world.
It’s also one of the most logistically demanding.
Nova Scotia still offers a moody, coastal, cinematic vibe, but in a more accessible and flexible way.
Instead of organising your day around logistics, you plan it around the experience you want to have.

CAPE SPLIT NOVA SCOTIA
US NATIONAL PARKS
Crowds at even sunrise locations
Strict permit rules and time windows
Limited privacy at major viewpoints
Heavy seasonal restrictions
U.S. National Parks like Yosemite, Zion, Glacier, and Banff are iconic for elopements.
Butttt popularity has kind of put a damper on their beauty.
NOVA SCOTIA
Quiet coastal locations without many people
More freedom in timing and location choices
A slower, more flexible elopement experience
For couples wanting nature without crowds or restrictions, Nova Scotia is the real MVP.

Learn why more American couples are choosing Nova Scotia over Scotland, Iceland, and crowded National Parks
When you compare destinations like Scotland, Iceland, and US National Parks to Nova Scotia, something important becomes clear:
It’s not about which place is more beautiful.
It’s about how your wedding day actually feels.
Some destinations give you iconic landscapes, but also crowds, permits, travel stress, or tight timelines.
More space
More flexibility
More privacy
And a slower, more intentional experience
For many couples, that shift changes everything.
If you’re still exploring where your elopement should take place, the next step is seeing what the experience actually looks like in Nova Scotia, not just how it compares.

SPRING
SUMMER
FALL
WINTER
OUTLIER MONTHS
(NOV, DEC, MARCH, APRIL)
Spring in Nova Scotia brings blooming wildflowers, budding trees, and cool temperatures around 15–20°C (59–68°F). The rains make it Waterfall season here! It’s also much quieter than summer, making it one of the best times of year to elope.
Temps can reach up to 40 C (104 F), with long days, beautiful sunsets, and less chance of rain, making it a stunning season for an elopement. It's also peak tourist season, so quieter rural locations are often the best choice for a more intimate experience.
October in Nova Scotia is peak fall colours, with bright oranges, reds, and yellows. Colours are best from early to late October. September offers warm weather without the summer humidity, along with warmer ocean temperatures and a slight dip in crowds.
Winter in Nova Scotia is very quiet and peaceful, making it a great choice if you don’t mind cold and wind. January and February may bring snow, frozen waterfalls, and beautiful sunsets, but the weather can be unpredictable with possible travel delays. When the snow does arrive, it creates a stunning, fairytale-like setting.
Eloping in Nova Scotia during the off-season months is definitely possible, but the landscapes are less vibrant with bare trees, brown grass, and cooler, wetter weather. The upside is fewer crowds, lower accommodation costs, and still-beautiful coastal cliff scenery. However, the weather can be unpredictable, so conditions vary quite a bit.

The Best Time of Year to Elope in Nova Scotia
I help couples plan and photograph elopements across Nova Scotia's wildest landscapes. Most couples I work with are coming from the U.S. and are looking for a day that feels relaxed, intentional, and connected rather than rushed or overly structured.
A big part of the planning process here is simply understanding how the light, weather, and locations work together—which is where most couples appreciate having my expert guidance. I was born and live in Nova Scotia, and have spent years exploring it's gorgeous hidden gems.
If you’re considering a Nova Scotia elopement, you can check availability for your date here
Most elopements here are intentionally slow and experience-based rather than rushed ceremonies.
A typical day might look like:
MORNING
Getting ready in a coastal cabin or small inn
Slow start with coffee, no rush
MIDDAY
Exploring locations or scenic drives
Light hiking or beach wandering
GOLDEN HOUR
Ceremony in a quiet coastal location
Vows with ocean wind and soft light
EVENING
Dinner, private celebration, or bonfire
Sunset portraits along the coast
The idea is to allow the day to flow naturally and really focus on the experience. This way you can actually be present with one another, not perform for anyone else.
