Searching for the best time of year to elope in Nova Scotia? Take it from a photographer who has lived here most of her life. You can’t really go wrong choosing any time of year to elope in Nova Scotia. BUT there are absolutely better times of the year than others, depending on your preferences/priorities. So let’s dive in!
Spring is the season of all the pretty blooms. The weather is still pretty cool, sitting around 15-20 C (59-68 F for my American friends). Our rain usually comes in April. Sometimes May gets rainy too. By the time May hits, things are starting to blossom. The trees are also getting their leaves, and life is returning to Nova Scotia. It’s a less busy than Summer, which makes it a great choice for eloping in my opinion!

Pros:
– Super pretty with all the colourful blooms
– Comfortable temps around 15-20 C (59-69 F)
– Less touristy than Summer
Cons:
– It can be a little wet/rainy

Summer in Nova Scotia is probably warmer than you think it is! Temperatures can reach up to 40 C (104 F) with the humidity. This can be uncomfortable if you don’t like that kind of heat. July is usually the hottest month, with August cooling down somewhat. The great thing about the Summer though is that the days are long. The sun sets around 9pm and the skies can be really beautiful, with less chance of rain. For an elopement, it’s best to choose shorter hikes to avoid getting too sweaty. Alternatively, consider hiking in the evenings when the weather is cooler. Tourist season is in full swing during Summer. So, make sure to avoid tourist hotspots during peak times in this season. Rural areas in Nova Scotia are never crowded, though!

Pros:
– Days are longer with the sun setting at around 9pm
– Less rain and beautiful sunsets
Cons:
– It can be hot/humid (temperatures reaching about 30-40 degrees C (86-104 F)
– Busiest Tourist Season

If you are coming for the stunning Fall colours (oranges, reds, yellows oh my!) October is your month. There is about a 3 week period from Oct 1-21 where the the colours are in full force. After this time the leaves start to fall. If you’re looking for Summer weather but without the humidity, September is your jam! The ocean has warmed up so it’s perfect for swimming and all the outdoor activities. But the air is less humid and the temperatures are more comfortable. Tourist season is technically starting to die down now. But popular attractions in Cape Breton draw more people at this time of year. This increase is due to the Fall colours. Many areas are still crowd-free, though.

Pros:
– The Fall Colours in NS are gorgeous
– Temps are comfortable (15 – 25 C/ 59 – 77 F)
– Oceans are warmed up for swimming
Cons:
– Tourist season can be busy in areas like Cape Breton because of the Fall Colours

If cold and wind doesn’t really bother you, and you want to have as few people around you as possible, then Winter in Nova Scotia can be an amazing time to elope. January and February usually have snow at least on the ground, but it’s not guaranteed. This time of year can be unpredictable. Warm spouts come in and wash away the snow. Travel can be delayed. But if you do get snow, my gosh it’s beautiful. The waterfalls and lakes freeze. Sunsets in Winter are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. The gentle falling snow is like a fairytale. If you dress for it, it can be so stunning.

Pros:
– Very few people at more popular look outs, like Peggys Cove, The Skyline Trail, etc.
– Landscapes are gorgeous with snow
– Stunning winter sunsets
Cons:
1. The Weather is unpredictable so you may not actually get snow
2. Potential Flight Delays/travel issues due to weather
3. Temps can be cold at -20 C (-4 F) at the worst of it (but often it’s warmer than that!)

It’s absolutely possible to elope in Nova Scotia during the above months. It’s just not the best time for beauty. All the foliage has fallen and the trees are empty. Grass has turned brown. It’s generally wetter and cooler. BUT the good thing about this time of year is that there are very few people. Cliff-side landscapes can still be quite beautiful, and accommodations can be cheaper. The weather is just unpredictable and you never know what you’ll get.
