So you’ve decided to elope in Nova Scotia? First of all… YAY!! Now comes the fun part. Figuring out where. And honestly? That can feel a little overwhelming!
Nova Scotia is packed with incredible places to get married. Rugged coastlines. White sand beaches. Tiny fishing villages. Mountain lookouts. Forest trails. Waterfalls. There are sooo many options that it’s easy to end up scrolling through Google Images for hours without actually getting any closer to making a decision.
Here’s the good news. You don’t need to find the most beautiful place. You need to find the place that feels the most like YOU. That’s something I tell every couple I work with.
I’ve photographed elopements where couples hiked for hours to reach a cliff overlooking the Atlantic. I’ve also photographed couples who wanted nothing more than a quiet beach, a picnic, and a sunset. Neither day was better than the other because the location matched the people. That’s the whole point.
This guide is here to help you figure out which part of Nova Scotia fits your vision best. Then, once you’ve narrowed it down, I’ll point you toward more detailed location guides for each region.
Let’s do it!
Wondering how to pick the right spot? Start with one question.
How do you want your day to feel?
Not what you want it to look like. How you want it to feel.
Because here’s the thing. If your dream day is slow, relaxed, and intentional, you probably won’t enjoy hiking four hours to a cliff. On the flip side, if you two LOVE adventuring together, spending the day walking coastal trails and chasing sunsets might end up being your favourite part of the whole experience.
I always tell couples to stop thinking about the ceremony first. Think about the day. What do you want to do together? Maybe that looks like grabbing coffee before sunrise, exploring a quiet trail, sharing your vows overlooking the ocean, then celebrating with seafood and wine afterwards.
Maybe it’s kayaking.
Maybe it’s camping.
Maybe it’s just watching the waves and doing absolutely nothing for a while.
That becomes your day. The ceremony is only a small part of it. Once you’ve figured out the feeling you’re after, choosing a location gets SO much easier.
Still not sure? Don’t worry. This is something I help every couple with.

One of my favourite things about Nova Scotia is that no two regions feel the same.
Drive an hour and the scenery completely changes. That’s pretty incredible when you think about it. So instead of choosing one location right away, let’s start by looking at the different regions. One of them usually jumps out almost immediately.

Want dramatic coastline without spending your entire wedding day driving?
This is it!
The Halifax region has some of the most accessible coastal scenery in the province, but here’s the part most people don’t realize.
The best spots usually aren’t the famous ones.
Sure, Peggy’s Cove is beautiful. But some of my favourite places are just down the road. Polly’s Cove. High Head Trail. Duncan’s Cove.
They’re the places where you can actually slow down.
Where you can hear the waves instead of tour buses.
Where your ceremony feels like your ceremony.
I’ve spent countless evenings photographing along this coastline, and one of my favourite things is how quickly the crowds disappear once you’re willing to walk just a little farther. Sometimes five extra minutes changes everything.
That’s the kind of location I love helping couples find.

Okay. This is a big one.
If you want mountains that drop into the ocean in a way that makes you go quiet for a second… this is it.
Cape Breton doesn’t really ease you in. You just kind of arrive and suddenly everything feels bigger than expected. The roads curve. The cliffs rise. The air feels different, even if that sounds dramatic to say out loud.
Is it worth the drive? Yes. Every time.
Some of my favourite spots here are Skyline Trail, Ingonish coastline, Franey Trail, and those random pull-offs you don’t even plan for but end up stealing the whole day.
And here’s something people don’t always expect. The in-between moments here matter just as much as the view. Driving between locations feels like part of the experience. Not filler. You’ll understand what I mean when you’re there.

The South Shore feels softer.
Not in a less dramatic way. Just… more open. More unhurried. It’s the kind of place where you don’t feel like you have to “go do” anything. You can just exist for a bit and it works.
Fishing boats. Granite coastlines. Tiny winding roads that don’t seem to be going anywhere important until suddenly they open up to something beautiful.
Blue Rocks is here. Gaff Point is here. Lunenburg is here. Hirtle’s Beach too.
And they all feel a bit like different versions of the same calm energy. I’ve done ceremonies here where couples didn’t even move much. Just stood in one place, wind blowing a bit, saying their vows like it was the easiest thing in the world.
No performance. No pressure. Just presence.

This region is a bit of a wildcard.
Everything feels a little more dramatic here, but in a different way than Cape Breton.
The tides are the obvious thing everyone talks about. And yes, they’re wild. But what people don’t always expect is how varied the landscape is once you actually explore it.
You get cliffs. Then forests. Then farmland. Then waterfalls. Then suddenly you’re standing somewhere like Cape Split and it feels like the entire ocean is pulling the horizon away from you.
It’s a lot. In a good way. Cape Split is the obvious standout, but there are quieter pockets all through the Valley that feel just as special if you know where to look.
I’ve had couples plan sunrise ceremonies here just to watch the tide change over the course of their vows. It sounds simple, but it hits harder than expected when you’re actually standing there.

This is one of the biggest questions couples ask me. And honestly? It matters more than the exact location most of the time.
Same cliff. Same beach. Same trail. Completely different experience depending on when you go.
So instead of giving you a generic “best season” answer, here’s what it actually feels like on the ground.
If timing matters for you (and it really does here), read this next:

Summer is the obvious one.

Warm evenings. Long golden sunsets. Everything green and alive and a little bit wild in that very East Coast way.
It’s also the busiest.
Not chaotic. Just… more people around. More hikers. More beach traffic. You’ll still find privacy, but you have to be a little more intentional about timing.
Early mornings help a lot here.
Fall is the one I quietly get excited about every year.

The air feels sharper. The colours show up in layers instead of all at once. And suddenly even familiar places feel different.
Cape Breton especially goes a bit unreal in October. Like someone turned the contrast up on the whole island.
If you want emotional atmosphere without trying too hard, this is the season.
Spring is softer.

A bit unpredictable. Sometimes muddy. Sometimes foggy in the best possible way.
But it’s also quiet. Really quiet.
You get trails almost to yourself. Coastlines that feel like they’re waking up. That slightly unpolished, in-between energy that some couples absolutely love.
Winter is not for everyone.

But the couples who choose it usually really choose it.
Empty beaches. Windy cliffs. Snow in unexpected places. That feeling of having the entire coastline to yourselves because almost no one else is out there.
It’s simple. Stripped back. Honest.
And cold. Let’s not pretend otherwise.
So when is the best time?
The real answer is this:
It depends on what kind of emotion you want your photos to hold.
Not just what it looks like.

Once you’ve got a season and a general region in mind, everything starts to come together faster than people expect.
This is usually the part where couples go from “we’re just thinking about it” to “okay, we’re actually doing this.”
A good elopement day here isn’t just picking a pretty spot. It’s building a flow.
Where you start. When you move. How long you stay somewhere. When the light hits the cliffs just right. When you pause instead of rushing to the next thing.
That’s what turns it from a photoshoot into a wedding day. And that’s where I come in.
I help you figure out:
You don’t need to have it all figured out before reaching out.
That’s kind of the point.

If one region kept pulling your attention while reading this, don’t ignore that.
People usually already know.
They just need permission to trust it.
