If you’ve found yourself bouncing back and forth between planning an elopement vs a small wedding… welcome to the club.
Almost every couple I work with starts there.
Maybe you love the idea of sharing your day with your closest people, but the thought of planning a traditional wedding makes you want to hide under a blanket. Maybe you’ve fallen down an Instagram rabbit hole of dreamy mountaintop ceremonies, but you’re wondering if you’ll regret not inviting your family.
The good news?
There’s no wrong answer.
Both elopements and small weddings can be incredibly meaningful. The best choice simply comes down to the kind of experience you want to have.
Let’s compare them honestly.

Modern elopements have come a long way from secretly running away to Vegas.
Today, an elopement is an intentionally tiny wedding focused on the couple’s experience rather than hosting an event. It might be just the two of you, or include a handful of your closest people.
Instead of spending the day entertaining guests, you’re spending it exploring a coastline, hiking to a cliff, kayaking to a secluded beach, sharing a picnic, or simply soaking in every moment together.
The day revolves around your relationship.
Not a timeline.
Not a reception schedule.
Not what everyone else expects.
A lot of the couples I work with choose Nova Scotia because it’s very secluded, and such a stunning hidden gem that you get the gorgeous landscapes as well as the privacy and intimacy that really suits an elopement. It’s also logistically pretty simple.
If you want to know more about what an elopement could look like in Nova Scotia, this is the best place to start.

A small wedding typically includes somewhere between 20 and 60 guests, although every couple defines it differently.
You’ll still have many of the traditional elements:
It’s essentially a traditional wedding, just with fewer people.
That smaller guest list usually creates a more relaxed atmosphere while still allowing you to celebrate with the people you love.
One of the biggest differences is where your budget goes.
With fewer (or no) guests, your budget can shift toward experiences.
Instead of paying for dozens of meals, table rentals, and favors, couples often invest in things like:
You’re spending money on memories instead of logistics.
A smaller guest list definitely saves money compared to a 150-person wedding.
But many of the biggest expenses don’t disappear.
You’ll likely still need:
Even with fewer guests, hosting people comes with significant costs.

Small Backyard Wedding

This is usually where couples feel torn.
Your guests (if you invite any) become part of the adventure rather than the audience.
Instead of sitting through a long reception, they might:
Or…
You may decide not to invite anyone at all.
And that’s okay too.

You get to celebrate with the people who have supported your relationship.
Parents get front-row seats.
Grandparents can be there.
Friends celebrate alongside you.
For many couples, that’s incredibly important.
Here’s where things become very different.
Elopements are surprisingly simple.
You’re coordinating:
That’s about it. The day stays flexible.
If the weather changes?
You pivot.
Want to stop for ice cream?
Do it.
See an incredible sunset?
Let’s chase it.
Your day can evolve naturally.
Even with only 30 guests, there are many moving pieces.
You’ll likely coordinate:
It’s absolutely manageable, but it is still event planning.
I break down everything you need to know about micro weddings and elopements in Nova Scotia so you know exactly How to Elope with zero stress.
Elopement
Small Wedding

This is probably the biggest difference of all.
Quiet.
Intentional.
Unhurried.
You have room to breathe.
To actually talk to each other.
To laugh.
To cry.
To soak everything in.
Many couples tell me their wedding day felt less like hosting an event and more like going on the greatest adventure of their lives together.
Joyful.
Communal.
Celebratory.
You’re surrounded by the people who matter most.
There’s laughter around the dinner table.
Hugs from grandparents.
Stories from lifelong friends.
The energy is shared rather than private.
Let’s be honest. This is often the hardest part. When it comes to an elopement vs a small wedding, everyone in your family has an opinion.
Some families have always imagined a traditional wedding.
Others completely understand the idea of an intimate celebration.
Neither option guarantees everyone will be happy.
The important question isn’t:
“What will everyone else think?”
It’s:
“What kind of memories do we want to look back on?”
Because twenty years from now, you’ll remember how your wedding day felt, not whether every distant cousin attended.
Your wedding day is about you and your relationship. No one else gets a say in how you celebrate that.

You might be an elopement couple if you:
Nova Scotia is such a perfect place for couples to elope because it’s less travelled, full of gorgeous secluded locations (coastal cliffs, winding roads and mountainous hills, fairy-tale forests, waterfalls, and even white sand beaches), and it’s pretty easy to get to. Especially for US couples!
If you want to picture some real elopement locations, see my Where to Elope in Nova Scotia Guide.

A small wedding might be perfect if you:

Absolutely.
It doesn’t have to be an Elopement vs a Small Wedding fight to the death.
Many couples choose a hybrid approach.
They’ll elope privately first, then celebrate with family afterward.
Or they’ll invite just immediate family to their ceremony before spending the rest of the day alone together.
There aren’t any rules saying you have to choose one or the other.
Elopement vs Small Wedding
If your dream day revolves around sharing the moment with family and friends, a small wedding might feel exactly right.
But if your dream starts with words like peaceful, private, adventurous, or intentional, an elopement offers something that’s difficult to recreate in even the smallest wedding.
When there isn’t a guest list to consider or a reception timeline to follow, the entire day becomes yours. You can watch the sunrise on a quiet beach, exchange vows on a windswept cliff, wander through forests, linger over dinner, and never once feel like you’re rushing to the next event.
That kind of freedom is hard to replicate when you’re hosting, even if you’re only hosting twenty people.
It’s one of the reasons so many couples choose to elope here in Nova Scotia. The secluded coastlines, quiet hiking trails, and hidden beaches make it easy to create a day that feels deeply personal, where the only expectations are your own.

Elopement vs Small Wedding Takeaway
Whether you’re leaning toward an adventurous elopement or you’re still weighing your options, the most important thing is creating a day that genuinely feels like you.
If a private, experience-first celebration sounds like your kind of wedding, start by exploring what’s possible.
