Want to know the hardest part about choosing a famous location? Everyone else had the same idea.

Places like Cadillac Mountain, Sand Beach, Jordan Pond, and Ocean Path are famous because they are genuinely beautiful. They are also where everyone goes.

During peak season, you might find:

Crowded parking lots.
Lines for sunrise viewpoints.
Families stopping for photos.
Hikers passing through.
Other couples taking engagement pictures.

And suddenly that quiet ceremony you imagined starts feeling more like a public event. And listen, there is nothing wrong with loving Acadia. It is gorgeous!

But gorgeous and private are two completely different things. A lot of couples who reach out to me aren’t looking for the most famous view. They’re looking for a place where they can actually be present.

A place where they can read their vows without strangers standing twenty feet away.
A place where the only interruption is the sound of waves crashing against the shore.

That’s the difference. Nova Scotia is a little further away, but it’s A LOT more private.

One of the biggest misconceptions about National Parks? People assume they can just show up somewhere beautiful and get married.

Sometimes you can and sometimes you can’t.

Acadia has rules around things like:

• Ceremony locations
• Group sizes
• Photography permits
• Parking
• Protected areas

And I get it. That’s a good thing. We want to protect these places. Butttt it does mean your dream of wandering into the woods, finding the perfect overlook, and saying your vows wherever you want might need more planning than you expected. Kind of a big deal, and why I’m saying pause before eloping in Acadia National Park. You can lose the whimsy and magic when things have to be that structured.

One of the reasons couples love Nova Scotia is because there is still that sense of freedom.

There aren’t any rules for intimate weddings or elopements on public land, including amazing look-offs, beaches, cliffs, etc.

You can explore.
You can slow down.
You can build your entire day around the landscape instead of trying to fit into a busy park schedule.

But for some, the travel logistics of going to a different country just aren’t worth it, and they are cool with the crowds. And that makes Acadia an awesome choice for those who live nearby and don’t mind sharing their day with other hikers/brides.

Legal Requirements For Both

YUP. They the State of Maine and Nova Scotia are exactly the same, even if you are a not Canadian and don’t live there.

Acadia National Park itself does however have some extra steps:

1. A ceremony with more than 10 guests requires a permit (including officiant, photographer, etc)
2. Permits must be applied for several months in advance
3. Everyone entering the park needs a vehicle Park Pass
4. There are designated areas for ceremonies and you aren’t allowed off the main paths.
   

Nova Scotia doesn’t have restrictions for elopements/micro weddings.

Places like provincial and national parks still require a permit, but only if you will be interrupting other hikers/events, and they aren’t strictly enforced. Also, some of the best places are actually on public land, with no permits required whatsoever.

Summer and Fall are when Acadia really shines. They’re also when everyone wants to visit. If you are set on an Acadia National Park Elopement, you may want to consider the off season if you don’t mind missing out on the Fall colours or Summer sun.

Fall especially brings huge crowds because everyone wants those famous New England colours. And yes, the colours are INCREDIBLE. There is something really special about driving through a forest full of orange, red, and golden leaves.

But imagine waking up before sunrise, putting on your wedding clothes, hiking out to your ceremony location, and arriving to find dozens of people already waiting for the same viewpoint…Not exactly the quiet, emotional moment you pictured.

This is where Nova Scotia feels different.

It offers all the beautiful colours, but there are just way less people. That’s the upside.

But Nova Scotia has it’s cons:

Like any coastal location, the weather is a little more unpredictable. You can get:

Fog
Rain
Sunshine
Wind

All in the same day! Spring and Fall tend to be a little more rainy/foggy, but the good news is that most wedding vendors are super flexible. I always tell my couples coming from other locations to plan a couple days as back ups during the time they are here, so if we have to pivot for rain, we can!

Rain and fog DOES bring the serious moody Scotland vibes, though. Maybe that’s your thing!

But you do still get:

Ocean cliffs.
Colourful forests.
Coastal trails.
